Mapping impunity: Silence in communication

Abstract
The journalistic exercise in Mexico has been developed since the beginning of the 21th century in a hostile context that has limited it during the process of producing information at local, regional and national levels. Therefore, in the present investigation I’ve built a historical database that covers the period between 2000 and 2018 about the murders of journalists in Mexico from a series of categories that were developed through the method of content analysis. In this sense, from the object of study different characterizations of these crimes have been made based on variables such as the territory, the type of events covered by journalists, the age and processes of deprivation of life and the effectiveness of the Mexican State in clarifying the crimes. With this, it is observed that the adverse context affects not only the production of information, but also the processes of freedom of expression and democracy in Mexico.
