Social media, body image, and mental health among students at FES Zaragoza UNAM
Main Article Content
Abstract
Social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat, are widely used platforms by young college students. These platforms allow for constant interaction and the dissemination of images and content that can shape the personal and social perception of users. In particular, these networks have been pointed out as an influential factor in self-image and mental health, due to the tendency to social comparison, the pressure to comply with certain beauty standards and the search for validation through obtaining "likes" and comments made on the publications that are made in them. Body image refers to the perception and attitude that a person has towards their own body. This perception can be altered by exposure to content on social networks that promote unrealistic ideals of beauty. Student mental health is another critical aspect that the project will look at. Social media can contribute both positively and negatively to mental health. On the one hand, they can offer social support and access to communities that promote self-acceptance. On the other hand, excessive use or exposure to cyberbullying and harmful content can increase the risk of anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems. This research collects data through surveys and interviews with students from FES Zaragoza, UNAM, in order to identify patterns in the use of social networks and their relationship with body image and mental health.
