Citizen management in the regeneration initiatives of Historical Center of Mérida

Abstract

Since the end of the previous century and especially during the first two decades in the current one, the organization of civil society in relation to heritage conservation has begun having more relevance in Mexico and particularly in Yucatan. Social participation about this issue started with the union organizations of archaeologists and architects, as well as with the oldest public institution of higher education Architecture in Yucatan, but it also extended more recently to another kind organizations union nature and philanthropist related to various topics of their specialty that little by little they have been earning expressive and management opportunities between government authorities and channeling citizens concerns and points of view regarding heritage conservation topics in the cities and rural areas from Yucatan. All of the above has had a tourist impact that has, in turn, increased the interest in different levels of government to take advantage of, and promote these efforts. In this work it is pretended to make an historical reflection about this task, exposing the efforts of various social, academic, and union organizations in order to put their performance in perspective and valorize its development and impact in the city of Merida.
