Abstract

A romantic breakup is considered a highly stressful experience, and the parties involved may experience psychological distress and even depression and anxiety. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between attachment styles, coping strategies after a breakup and posttraumatic growth in university students. The sample consisted of 145 young university students with an age range of 18 to 29 years (M=21.61, DE= 2.24), 89.7% of whom were from private universities, 9% from public universities and 1.4% from others. 76.6% of the sample was made up of women and 22.8% of men. The Adult Attachment Styles Scale for the Mexican population, the Coping Estimation Inventory (COPE), and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory were used to measure the established variables. Pearson's Correlation test, Student's T test and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the results. The results showed the impact of attachment styles and coping strategies on the individual's posttraumatic growth.
