Abstract

Female participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
disciplines is essential for economic development, progress, and innovation in various
industries. However, historically, women have faced challenges and barriers to professional
development in these areas, mainly due to gender mandates and stereotypes, leading to
underrepresentation compared to their male counterparts. This qualitative study examines
the narratives of 22 women scientists in different areas of knowledge, with diverse
experiences and professional trajectories. In-depth interviews and thematic analysis reveal
the importance of social support for skill development, confidence, and resilience in
overcoming gender barriers. The role of family support is highlighted in positively
influencing the choice of STEM careers by providing emotional backing, guidance, and
inspiration. Participants mentioned that the support of friends, family, and partners in time
management, childcare, and emotional encouragement has been crucial in addressing the
challenges of work-life balance. Likewise, they emphasize the significance of networking
with other women who share similar challenges, which has been invaluable for their
emotional well-being, as well as for confronting and challenging gender biases in the
workplace.
