Abstract

The existence of a direct relation between internal control loci (Berrenberg, 1987), perceived social support (Pelletier, Alfano, & Fink, 1994), and psychological adjustment has been documented in elders; an inverse relation of depression with anxiety, and death anxiety has been reported. Spiritual life in elders has been underscored for its ability to affect positively their health and its sense of personal well being; but Rivera-Ledesma y Montero-López Lena (2005), have not found a significant association between that variable and psychological adjustment, when measured with such variables as loneliness and depression in a Mexican context. this work, correlational, descriptive, and transversal had as a purpose to determine the relation that internal loci, personal relation with God, and perceived social support with psychological adjustment in Mexican elders, measured within six variables: loneliness, aging anxiety, death anxiety, depression, hopelessness, and suicidal thoughts. The hypothesis explored was that high levels of control loci, perceived social support and spirituality would show less psychological maladjustment levels. A sample of 122 Mexican elderly adults, 55.7 % women with 60.9 years of age average (SD=8.24), mainly catholic (87%). A self-administering questionnaire of 105 items that included nine scales with appropiate psychometriccharacteristics in Mexican elders was used. Results showed that higher levels of locus of control are associated with minor levels of psychological adjustment. Higher levels of perceived social support reported lower levels of loneliness and anxiety about aging; spiritually showed the same inverse relation with respect to aging anxiety, but no with the other variables. Results also emphazise the importance of locus of control as a variable with high adaptative value in Mexican elders.
