Abstract

VIDEO STANDARDS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED TO FULFILL A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS SUCH AS DIGITAL STORAGE, MULTIMEDIA TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION, CATV, DVD, VIDEO CONFERENCING, MULTIMEDIA INDEXING, DIGITAL CINEMA AMONG OTHERS. VIDEO STANDARDS DE VELOP HIGH COMPRESSION RATIOS USING SEVERAL METHODS TO REDUCE TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL REDUNDANCIES. THE NEW VIDEO STANDARD, H.264 / MPEG-4 PART 10, NOT ONLY IS EFFICIENT TO STORE VIDEO BUT ALSO TO OBTAIN A HIGHER CODING EFFICIENCY AND ERROR RESILIENCE THAN THE PREVIOUS SIMILAR STANDARDS MPEG-2, H.263 AND MPEG-4 PART 2. IN THIS ARTICLE, WE DESCRIBE THE NEW VIDEO STANDARD H.264/MPEG-4 PART 10. FIRST, WE DE SCRIBE THE CODING ALGORITHM, AND THEN WE COMPARE ITS CODING EFFICIENCY VERSUS THE PREVIOUS EXISTING STANDARDS. COMPARISONS SHOW THAT THE NEW STANDARD HAS A CODING EFFICIENCY OF ABOUT 1.5 TIMES, IN EACH TEST SEQUENCE, AS COMPARED TO THE OTHER STANDARDS.
