Marxism and the Nation: Mariátegui in the Latin American Exile in Mexico

Abstract

Fifty years after the death of José Carlos Mariátegui (1894-1930) a group of Latin American’s leftist intellectuals that was in exile in Mexico started a new reading of Mariategui’s work. The Argentinians José Aricó (1931-1991) and Oscar Terán (1938-2008) and the Bolivian René Zavaleta Mercado (1937-1984) were involved in the community that was constituted through journals of political interventions, days of academic discussions and books production. These three distinguished intellectuals favoured analysing the problem of a nation within the socialist perspective. In this article the author is going to deal with the contributions of Aricó, Terán and Zavaleta.
