Abstract

IN THIS STUDY, WE INVESTIGATED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT WAYS CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS CAN LISTEN TO MUSIC NOT PROFESSIONALLY, AND THE DIFFERENT CONTEXTS ON WHICH THEY LISTEN, WHEREAS THE AGE, NATIONALITY AND THE WAYS OF LISTENING. WE ANALYZED PART OF AN INTERVIEW, WHICH WAS MADE WITH OPEN QUESTIONS, FOCUSING SOME MUSICAL HEARING COGNITIVE SUBJECTS. THIS INTERVIEW, WHICH WAS TOOK BY 120 CHILDREN, WHO WERE DIVIDED IN FOUR GROUPS, COMING FROM TWO RANKS: 9-10 AND 13-14 YEARS AND TWO NATIONALITIES (ENGLISH AND PORTUGUESE). THE RESULTS TOLD US THAT FEW CHILDREN LISTEN JUST TO MUSIC, THEY PREFER TO LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE THEY DO ANOTHER MUSICAL ACTIVITY, SUCH AS SINGING OR DANCING, FOR DOING AN EXTRA MUSICAL ACTIVITY, SUCH AS STUDYING OR PLAYING. THE DIFFERENT WAYS OF LISTENING TO MUSIC DEPEND ON THE INTENTION AND ON THE LEVEL OF ATTENTION OF CHILDREN, OF THE FUNCTIONS OF MUSIC, BUT, MOST IMPORTANT, THEY DEPEND ON THE CONTEXT AND THE SITUATION WHERE CHILDREN LISTEN TO MUSIC. WE DIDN'T FIND GREAT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS, BECAUSE THERE ARE ALMOST NONE.
