Abstract
TWENTY-THREE GENERA AND 80 SPECIES OF EUPHORBIACEA (EXCLUDING EUPHORBIA) ARE REPORTED TO OCCUR IN SALINE AND GYPSEOUS ENVIRONMENTS OF MEXICO. A KEY TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF THESE TAXA AS WELL AS STANDARIZED GENERIC DECRIPTIONS, DISTRIBUTIONAL AND HABITAT INFORMATION FOR ALL THE SPECIES, AND TAXONOMIC NOTES ARE PROVIDED. WITH REGAR TO THESE ENVIRONMENTS IN MEXICO, THE EUPHORBIACEA ARE THE FOURTH MOST DIVERSE. SIXTY SPECIES ARE HALOPHILUS (SEVEN PREFERENTIAL), 14 SPECIES ARE GYPSOPHILOUS (NON PREFERENTIAL), FOUR SPECIES ARE DISTRIBUTED IN BOTH ENVIRONMENTS AND TWO SPECIES ARE DISTRIBUTED IN SALTYGYPSEOUS SOILS. ALL OF THE GENERA THAT ARE ENDEMIC TO THE NEW WORLD HAVE THEIR CENTERS OF DIVERSIFICATION IN MEXICO; ONLY ENRIQUEBELTRANIA IS ENDEMIC TO MÉXICO. TWENTY-FIVE SPECIES ARE ENDEMIC TO MÉXICO; 17 ARE ENDEMIC TO MEGAMEXICO I, 4 ARE ENDEMIC TO MEGAMEXICO II, 81 ARE RESTRICTED TO THE NEW WORLD, AND THREE ARE WIDELY DISTRIBUTED. THE DISTRIBUTIONAL RANGES WITHIN MEXICO ARE EXTENDED FOR 15 SPECIES, AND CROTON ARGYRANTHEMUS IS REPORTED FOR MEXICO FOR THE FIRST TIME.
