Abstract

BASED ON A BIOCLIMATIC MODELING PROGRAM (BIOCLIM), THE POTENTIAL DISTRIBUTION OF FOUR MEXICAN SPECIES OF JEFEA (ASTERACEAE) WAS DETERMINED. THE SYSTEM EVALUATED 19 CLIMATIC PARAMETERS ALONG WITH THE CURRENT KNOWN DISTRIBUTION OBTAINED FROM HERBARIUM SPECIMENS. THE PREDICTED DISTRIBUTION OF ALL SPECIES AGREES WITH DIFFERENT REGIONAL SCHEMES THAT HAVE BEEN DEVISED FOR THE COUNTRY, SUCH AS GEOMORPHOLOGICAL OR PHYTOGEOGRAPHICAL PROVINCES, OR THE ECOREGIONS. THE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT THE POTENTIAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF THESE SPECIES EXTEND INTO 26 MEXICAN PRIORITY TERRESTRIAL REGIONS FOR CONSERVATION, WHEREAS HERBARIUM RECORDS ARE REPRESENTED ONLY IN SIX OF SUCH REGIONS.
