Prevalence of Diabetic Neuropathy in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 at a Regional Clinic in the State of Mexico

Abstract

Objective: to determine the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (dm2) of an out-patient clinic. Methods: descriptive and observational study in a sample of 106 patients with dm2 of the regional clinic in Santiago Tianguistenco (rcst), in the State of Mexico. The Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument was applied consisting of a self-assessment on the presence of neuropathic symptoms and a physical examination of both feet, which includes inspection of the foot, sensitivity to vibration, ankle reflection and monofilament. Results: in 81.1% it was detected diabetic neuropathy, the associated factors were: male 59.4%; age from 51 to 60 39.6%; low level of schooling 35.8%; married 88.7%; 5-10 years of evolution of diabetes in 52.7%; overweight in 52.8%; lack of glycemic control in 69.8%; abnormality in the appearance of the feet in 82.1%, decrease of sensitivity in 76.4%; and decrease in vibration sensitivity in 20.9%. Conclusions: the prevalence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is higher than 80%, it was more frequent in men from 51 to 60 years, the major injuries identified were, abnormalities in the appearance of the feet and decrease in sensitivity. Before this health problem, it is necessary to establish preventive measures to avoid the deterioration in the quality of life of the patient and his family.
