Abstract

Norberto Codina, Venezuelan writer and editor and Cuban resident for many years, analyzes in this essay the Latin American identity of Nicolás Guillén, returning to a literary dialogue of 1930 in which the author of Motivos de son, spokesman of two misunderstood and exploited continents -África and America- affirms: "I believe that, indeed, America needs strength. Nothing can give it better than the black. The black and perhaps the Indian. Both will be able to sing the yet unexpressed, vigorous note that may give the color of new life to the impoverished universal symphony."
