Abstract

This paper critically analyzes the cognitive-map concept in terms oh) its subjectivity, as seen in the characterization of environmental knowledge as “images” of the world; b) its use of the information-processing approach in modeling environmental perception; c) its restricted representation of environmental perception, which is limited to spatial cognition; and d) its imprecision in defining the cognitive-map's "coping with the environment' property. In addition, both the research strategy and most common methods used in the study of cognitive maps are mentioned and criticized. An alternative concept and approach is outlined by developing the notion of environmental competencies. This is defined as a set of skills and abilities used in response to environmental requirements, where a correspondence between. The morphology of objects and/or situational events is required. This concept's objectivity, integrativity, Inclusiveness and utility are discussed, as well as a possible methodological approach to identify competencies within the framework of environmental knowledge.
