Adam Smith and his critics. On the origin and use of money

Abstract

Adam Smith continues and will continue to be an obligatory reference for anyone who specializes in or has any interest in economics. This even though many of his theoretical assertions have been rejected or at least questioned from the entire spectrum of economic thought, his monetary theory is no exception; specifically, regarding his theory on the origin of money. Nevertheless, this work affirms, the re-reading of An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations , as well as the criticisms to which it has been subjected, can leave important lessons for current economic research.
