Abstract

This article seeks to highlight the relevance of Hilferding’s political life in the modern context of the global financial crisis and the highly likely accompanying radicalization of political positions within the dominant countries. As will be argued, Hilferding maintained a high level of coherence between his economic thinking and political actions. Precisely due to the fact that the German Socialist project during the Weimar Republic did not achieve its objectives, the economic and political thinking of its intellectual leader is highly relevant in the current global situation, in which the economic crisis and its resultant social and political decomposition demand a greater and deeper understanding of economics by the world’s most influential politicians if the tragedies of central Europe in the thirties and forties of last century are not to be repeated.
