El presente número figura como el primero de la Tercera Época de la revista. Fundada por el Dr. Iván San Martín Córdova, la coordinó en su primera época entre 2010 y 2017. La Segunda Época, entre 2017 y 2022, estuvo inicialmente en manos de la Dra. Johana Lozoya Meckes y posteriormente de la Dra. Alejandra Contreras Padilla; durante este periodo la revista transitó del formato impreso al digital y además se incluyó el Dossier, sección temática de cada número.

En esta nueva época, la revista se consolida como una publicación digital de investigación académica a partir de tres secciones primarias: Dossier, Artículos de investigación y Reportes técnicos. Cada número tiene una temática especifica en el Dossier, pero también está abierta a recibir artículos de investigación que no atiendan dicha temática en la sección de Artículos de investigación. Es importante precisar que, a diferencia de la segunda época, las temáticas abarcan dos números, es decir que, siendo una revista semestral, los dos números del año están emparentados dentro de una temática mayor. En el caso que nos ocupa, el número 27, “Azul”, estará hermanado con “Verde”, del número 28.

Sobre los Reportes técnicos, cabe señalar que son de particular importancia al apostar por la investigación experimental científica en el campo de la arquitectura, el urbanismo y el paisaje. Este espacio está a cargo del Dr. Alberto Muciño Vélez del Laboratorio de Materiales y Sistemas Estructurales (lmse) de la Facultad de Arquitectura, un laboratorio conahcyt.

Otra característica de la tercera época es la incorporación de Documenta, sección en la que se busca brindar una vitrina que visibilice documentos relevantes en términos de la historia de la arquitectura, el urbanismo y el paisaje que son resguardados o forman parte de los diferentes fondos que custodia la Facultad de Arquitectura, principalmente dos de ellos: el Acervo de Arquitectura Mexicana y los Archivos de la Biblioteca Lilia Guzmán. Esta sección está a cargo de la Dra. Elisa Drago Quaglia del Acervo de Arquitectura Mexicana (aam).

Asimismo, la revista busca ser una plataforma de difusión de la investigación no sólo en cuanto artículos de investigación que forman parte de las secciones de la revista, sino también al difundir la labor del Centro de Investigaciones en Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Paisaje (ciaup) de la Facultad de Arquitectura y del Programa de Maestría y Doctorado en Arquitectura (pmyda) de la unam.

Azul: los materiales y su interacción con el medio

Las edificaciones no son consideradas tan permanentes como antaño sino de duración mucho más limitada, […] además, con la fabricación casi ilimitada de materiales de construcción y con su exagerada publicidad enfocada a un máximo consumo, se han propiciado tendencias de modas arquitectónicas que duran tan poco como la producción de muchos de esos materiales, que rápidamente dejan el paso a otros nuevos.1

Como recoge el epígrafe, hace apenas 45 años se consideraba ilimitada la capacidad de producción de materiales y se señalaban procesos que hoy en día se han generalizado, como lo es la fast fashion arquitectónica. Sin embargo, en contraste, en la actualidad somos conscientes que experimentamos un cambio de paradigma en cuanto a esta circunstancia. Estamos transitando de la abundancia de la energía barata, que se dio como resultado de la explotación de los combustibles fósiles desde inicios del siglo xx, a un escenario opuesto en el presente siglo. Como nos recuerdan Alejandra Caballero y Luis Fernando Guerrero, con la llegada de la era del Antropoceno, la frase “las construcciones son el reflejo de la sociedad que las produce y los sucesos por los que transita”2 cobra una dimensión diferente, al hacernos reflexionar sobre la propia viabilidad de la supervivencia de la tierra y de toda la vida en ella.

El número 27 de la revista que ahora presentamos planteó evaluar cómo los materiales naturales y los transformados conforman el hábitat humano. Una temática amplia y relevante frente a la crisis medioambiental actual y la responsabilidad innegable de la arquitectura y el urbanismo en dicho proceso.

En este complejo escenario de transformación, un tema de investigación central es poder empatar las necesidades de hábitat del ser humano con las capacidades ecológicas de la propia tierra para satisfacerlas. Entre la múltiples vías que pueden explorarse encontramos el ciclo de vida de los materiales, entender la relación entre el ser humano y los materiales y cómo podemos alargar su vida útil, desde lo físico, pero también desde lo intangible a partir de su resignificación; con enfoques muy distintos pero todos complementarios, desde la ciencias de materiales, pasando por la historia de la arquitectura y finalmente a través de la percepción con la psicología.

his number is the first issue of the Third Period of Academia XXII. Founded by Dr. Iván San Martín Córdova, who coordinated the journal throughout the First Period, from 2010 to 2017. The Second Period, between 2017 and 2022, was initially in the hands of Dr. Johana Lozoya Meckes, and later, those of Dr. Alejandra Contreras Padilla; it was in this Second Period when the journal changed from the printed, to the digital format; this period also saw the introduction of Dossier, a thematic section in each issue.

In this new era, the journal consolidates itself as a digital academic research publication based on three primary sections: Dossier, Research articles, and Technical reports. Each number has a specific theme in the Dossier, but is also open to receiving research articles that do not address the theme of the Research articles section. It is important to specify that, as of the Third Period, each theme runs for two issues, thus, being a biannual journal, the two annual issues are related through the overarching theme. In the case at hand, number 27, and the theme “Azul”, is to be twinned with “Verde”, in number 28.

Regarding the Technical reports section, it should be noted that the articles are of particular importance, given that the focus is on experimental scientific research in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape. This section is headed by Dr. Alberto Muciño Vélez, from the Laboratorio de Materiales y Sistemas Estructurales (lmse) of the Facultad de Arquitectura, a conahcyt laboratory.

Another characteristic of the Third Period is the introduction of Documenta, a section that provides a showcase to highlight documents relevant to the history of architecture, urbanism and landscape; the said articles are stored in (or form part of) the different collections held in the custody of the Facultad de Arquitectura, principally from two of them: the Acervo de Arquitectura Mexicana, and the Archives of the Lilia Guzmán y García Library. Blue: materials and their interaction with the environment

Buildings are no longer considered as permanent,

as they once were, but of a much more limited duration,

[...] in addition, with the almost unlimited manufacture

of construction materials, and their exaggerated advertising

focused on maximum consumption, architectural fashion

trends have been fostered that last as little as the production of many of those materials, which quickly give way to new ones.1

As stated in the epigraph, barely 45 years ago, the production capacity of materials was considered unlimited, and processes that today have become widespread were noted, such as architectural ‘fast fashion’. However, in contrast, we are currently aware that we are experiencing a paradigm shift in this regard. We are undergoing a change from the abundance of cheap energy, which occurred as a result of the exploitation of fossil fuels at the beginning of the 20th Century, to an adverse scenario in this Century. As Alejandra Caballero and Luis Fernando Guerrero remind us, with the arrival of the Anthropocene era, the phrase “constructions are a reflection of the society that produces them and the events through which they transit”,2 takes on a new dimension, inducing us to reflect on the very viability of the survival of the earth, and all life thereon.

Issue 27 of the magazine that we are now presenting evaluates how both natural and processed materials make up the human habitat; a broad and relevant theme, when faced with the current environmental crisis, albeit whilst assuming the undeniable responsibility of architecture and urbanism in the said process.

In this complex transformational scenario, a central research topic is to enable a match between the habitat needs of the human being, and the ecological capacities of the earth itself to satisfy them. Among the multiple avenues that may be explored are the life cycle of the materials, an understanding of the relationship between human beings and materials, and how we can extend the useful life of the materials, regarding their physical aspect, but also covering the intangible by way of their resignification; highly different approaches, though all complementary; from the science of the materials themselves, through the history of architecture, and finally, through psychological perception.
